Fermata ~ To hold a tone or rest held beyond the written value at the discretion of the performer.
Using the word “Fermata” in a sentence ~ The organ performer was taught to stop playing at a fermata mark until the reverberation was almost gone before continuing to play.
All of our Music Rhapsody kids love the song Silly Sam from Kids Make Music, Babies Make Music Too! Just like Silly Sam gets to decide how long to hide behind the rock, the ‘conductor’ of the song gets to decide also! This is a simple and effective way to demonstrate the meaning of the word “fermata” while also giving the children a chance to have control over the song by allowing them to decide just how long to wait before that sneaky snake Silly Sam comes out and shakes his tail!

Ostinato ~ a short repeated rhythmic or melodic pattern.
Using the word “Ostinato” in a sentence ~ Our 4-6 year old classes enjoyed making up a rhythmic pattern and repeating it over and over to play ostinatos during our Tideo instrumental section.
The children have learned many Italian words this school year since music vocabulary is almost all in Italian. They can musically demonstrate these other words frequently used in class as a part of our games, stories, dances or even names of puppets! Adagio, Allegro, Glissando, Tremelo, Piano, Forte, Accent, Crescendo.

Ask the typical teenager what subject they dislike the most in school and about 80% of the time you will get “math” as the answer…this can be a troubling issue for parents – mainly because if you ask the typical parent what subject they disliked the most in school you will get “math” as the answer!!
So how can you help your child excel in a subject he or she dislikes or better yet – grow up not disliking it at all?!
The secret to most of this problem is to begin at an early age, raising a child who doesn’t dislike the subject at all!
“How would I do this?” You ask…and the answer is: by raising a child who is more prone to being sucessful at the subject.
“Well now HOW do you do THAT?!” You might say…and the answer to that is: by giving your child exposure to enjoyable things which will assist in cultivating stimulating activity in his or her brain which has been proven to help children learn and succeed in things as specific as – you guessed it – math!
Studies are finding that children who are raised with a solid appreciation of music and who have been exposed to music education at an early age, are more prone to succeding academically in subjects such as…MATH! Yes, a study done by a psychology professor at Harvard University found that children who attend music classes are better than children who attend little to no music classes, at tasks involving basic geometric skills!
Just one of many reasons to come in and try out one of Music Rhapsody’s free music classes! Not only are you and your little one having a great time – but who knows – you might just be helping to make them a better in several other areas of learning!
